1st October Amsterdam

** Today my mother turns 96! Living within a retirement home, within a dementia ward, within her locked mind, she is unfortunately, total unaware of this milestone. Anyway, happy birthday mom.

** My first full day in Amsterdam. My first Amsterdam Americano & coissant, devouring it while looking at the canals and the amazing bridges and the many people who seem to be just wandering  around looking for breakfast. The coissant is very tasty; not too sweet and definately not too buttery.

** One thing I have already figured out is that in London the impression is that the economy is coffee shop based, whereas in Amsterdam, in the canal zone anyway, the economy appears to be sex, vaping &  marijuana shop based.

** Although I am off on an almost 2 klm walk to the Reichmuseum, it will take me way longer than a normal human as I stop every few seconds to take photos, something this city appears to have been designed for. I will keep adding to this as the day continues. And as you can see, very little blue sky.

Early morning is the only good time to photograph the canals. The water is so like a mirror.

Obviously they enjoy visits by Israelis

Had a great humus, pita and olives for lunch here, and the obligatory small beer

The canals at night. They are so alive with drunk Brits, students, parents with their toddlers, in fact any and all walks of life.

** The Rijkmuseum is absolutely fantastic. It is also the busiest museum I have visited over the past 10 plus weeks, covering 16 European cities and in excess of 35 museums.  It was also, surprisingly, one of the most expensive ticket prices I have had to pay so far in Europe but was so worth it.

The "Night Watch" is as good as it gets. I could have stood there for hours but the surge of humanity was all around me, so this is the best I can do. Are you aware that the painting was much wider but over the years side parts have been removed.
